OPHELIA UNDERWATER

By Janielle Kastner

Directed by Jenna Richanne Hannum

Adapted from William Shakespeare's Hamlet

March 19-22, 2020

"Highlighting Kastner's talent for juxtaposing timeless concerns... A rich and exciting first play. We look forward to seeing what Kastner does next."

"... Janielle Kastner's timely and thought-provoking one-woman play."

Ophelia is drowning, and this is her story..

Ophelia had everything: the boyfriend, the future, the dress. Her life was a comedy. Until it really, really wasn’t. Set underwater in the mind of Hamlet’s forgotten, drowned heroine, Ophelia cross-examines her story, her existence, and most importantly - her ending. Janielle Kastner’s aggressively contemporary play explores the good news, the bad news, and the ultimate cost of being a very good girl.

Whether you like it or not… it’s the musical TIME Magazine calls "The most exciting rock score written for the theater since, oh, ever!" After a botched sex-change operation leaves her with an “angry inch”, Hedwig Schmidt flees from her home in communist East Berlin to start a new life in the USA. Now this internationally ignored song stylist is bringing her story of  perseverance to Dallas in this thrilling portrait of a punk rock goddess. It’s a hilarious, touching, and inspiring ride for anyone who’s ever felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.
